The Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus along with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra directed by Dr. Robert Taylor will present a concert that represents a combination of classic choral music in the presentation of Gabriel Faure’s classic Requiem Mass and the world premier of one piece recently commissioned for the chorus, Dover Beach by Edward Hart.
The Requiem Mass is “a requiem for people of the world who have understood how to live their life just as they know how to die.” It is a classic in symphonic choral literature. Kori Miller, soprano, and Dr. Art Bumgardner, bass, are the featured soloists.
The new piece reflect the modern era. Edward Hart is Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music at the College of Charleston. His music, performed in Charleston and around the world has been described by the Sun-Sentinel, South Florida, as “…well crafted, smartly scored and cast in an accessible style that clearly communicates to audiences,” and the Charleston Post and Courier as having “…great sweep and strong appeal.” In Dover Beach he sets Matthew Arnold’s 1867 poem to modern harmonies and rhythms reflecting the poem’s mournful tone and free verse.
