SUMMARY:Masterworks - Beethoven 9
DESCRIPTION:INTRO\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRalph Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs is a choral work which heavily features a baritone soloist in four of the five songs. Based on poems set to music\, the verses are largely spiritually derived. While the first four maintain a tone of a deep introspection\, the concluding fifth song “Antiphon\,” lifts like a triumphant hymn. \nRapturous. Colossal. Legendary. These are all apt descriptions of one of the most well-known pieces of music of all time. In it\, you experience sounds on a grand scale and voices like nothing else heard before or since. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony —his last—was a success from the very beginning. \nThe Ninth Symphony premiered in 1824 at a concert conducted by the composer\, who at this point had lost his hearing. Its opening movement softly rumbles in anticipation and then builds to erupt; the second movement is lively but intense\, and never shallow; the third is intimate\, deliberately slow; the fourth movement ushers in a raucous fanfare\, and attempt to return to earlier themes\, and finally culminates victoriously with a united powerhouse of chorus\, soloists\, and musicians. \n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: Click here to learn about the new health and safety protocols. \nAll ticket sales are final. No refunds will be issued. Thank you for your understanding. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\n\nRALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS \nFIVE MYSTICAL SONGS \n  \nLUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN \nSYMPHONY NO. 9 IN D MINOR\, OP. 125\, “CHORAL” \n\n\n\nARTISTS\n\n\n\nSaundra DeAthos\, Soprano \nHarold Meers\, Tenor \nMark Delavan\, Baritone \nCharleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus \n\nDr. Robert Taylor\, Director\n\nKen Lam\, Conductor

SUMMARY:Masterworks 3
DESCRIPTION:INTRO\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecognized as the leading opera composer of his time\, the prolific Gioachino Rossini wrote The Silken Staircase at age 20. The comedic opera\, though very popular in its day\, is not performed as often as are his The Barber of Seville or William Tell. However\, The Silken Staircase Overture stands the test of time as a masterpiece punctuated by lively banter between the strings and the upper woodwinds. \nAt its 1803 premiere\, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto was not entirely complete\, and the solo passages were played by the composer himself largely from memory. The concerto is often associated with Beethoven maneuvering away from his more Mozart-influenced earlier piano concertos to develop his own style. Indeed\, it is a wonderful display of the dramatic musicality that we have come to know as quintessentially Beethoven. \nIn The First Walpurgis Night\, Felix Mendelssohn reimagines a spooky yet comic tale with building momentum. With ghosts\, witches\, owls\, pitchforks\, and the devil this work is perfect for the Halloween holiday! Themes of conflict and oppression are woven throughout and intertwined by the music and the voices; in one moment it is serious and serene\, and in the next rowdy and rambunctious. \n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: Click here to learn about the new health and safety protocols. \nAll ticket sales are final.
SUMMARY:Mozart's Requiem
DESCRIPTION:The CSO Chorus joins the Charleston Symphony for a monumental rendition of Mozart’s Requiem\, the final composition of Mozart’s life\, and one of the most famous works ever written. Requiem was commissioned by an anonymous patron who attempted to keep his identity secret because he was planning to pass Mozart’s work off as his own. Mozart worked on the piece up until the day of his death—even rehearsing various choral parts with friends while in bed only hours before he died. \nBuy tickets \n

SUMMARY:Benjamin Britten’s Saint Nicolas
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Britten wrote the cantata Saint Nicolas in 1948 for the centennial celebrations of Lancing College in Sussex. Writing specifically for the resources available to him on this occasion\, Britten scored the piece for mixed choir\, tenor soloist\, three or four boys\, strings\, piano duet\, organ and percussion. Within this ensemble\, the only professional musicians required were the tenor soloist\, a string quartet to lead the other strings\, and the percussionists. Saint Nicolas marks Britten’s first professional work intended primarily for performance by amateur musicians. Now the cantata is frequently performed by youth and amateur ensembles. While the piece was written for Lancing College\, the first performance was actually\, with the College’s permission\, the opening concert of the first Aldeburgh Festival in June 1948\, when it was performed in Aldeburgh Church. SUMMARY:Carmina Burana
DESCRIPTION:This exciting performance of Carmina Burana will feature 150 singers from the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Charleston Children’s Chorus\, 70 plus musicians from the Charleston Symphony Orchestra\, and three guest vocalists alongside 28 dancers from the Nashville Ballet. Based on a collection of poems written by clergy and theology students in the 11th\, 12th and 13th centuries\, Carmina Burana examines love\, fortune and the cycle of life. \nThe ballet is set to the iconic music of German composer Carl Orff written in the 1930s. The opening piece\, “O Fortuna”\, has made its mark as one of the most recognizable pieces of music in the world. “The music is magnificent on its own\, but when paired with dance it creates an almost spiritual experience. The ballet explores humanity’s highs and lows\, and ultimately the role that sheer fortune plays in our lives. The music mimics the theme of the entire work—it circles back to end where it all begins.” – Paul Vasterling\, Artistic Director and CEO. \nNashville Ballet\nNashville Ballet is the largest professional ballet company in Tennessee. Nashville Ballet presents a varied repertoire of classical ballet and contemporary works by noted choreographers\, including original works by Artistic Director & CEO\, Paul Vasterling. \nbuy tickets
