SUMMARY:Masterworks 3-Sanctuary Road
DESCRIPTION:Conductor Andrew Grams leads the CSO in an all-American program of music that expresses the pulse of freedom that courses through all of us\, from Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber to the operatic storytelling of history in Sanctuary Road\, created by Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell. \nPaul Moravec describes his and Mark Campbell’s Sanctuary Road as an “American historical oratorio” based on the writings of William Still — an African American abolitionist who aided travelers through the Underground Railroad. Still authored a book of the same name (The Underground Railroad) which told the once-secret stories of fugitive slaves and their struggles for freedom. Moravec\, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer\, and Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award-winning librettist Mark Campbell present the emotionally powerful operatic storytelling of essential American history through orchestra\, soloists\, and chorus with Sanctuary Road. This promises to be a performance not soon forgotten by an audience that will undoubtedly be moved. \nPROGRAM\nAaron Copland\nFanfare for the Common Man \nSamuel Barber\nAdagio for Strings \nAaron Copland\nAppalachian Spring Suite \nPaul Moravec/Mark Campbell\nSanctuary Road Oratorio for Soloists\, Chorus and Orchestra (libretto by Mark Campbell)

SUMMARY:Carmina Burana with the Richmond Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Richmond Ballet brings the iconic Carmina Burana to the Gaillard Center stage with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and the Chorus. Set to Carl Orff’s masterful choral score\, John Butler’s Carmina Burana is one of the most popular works in the Richmond Ballet repertory. Witness the brazen strength and hypnotizing passion behind Butler’s choreography in this groundbreaking ballet of the 20th century. \nOriginally choreographed in 1959 for New York City Opera\, John Butler’s powerful\, impassioned masterwork Carmina Burana uses the full breadth of Carl Orff’s choral score to explore the melding of classical ballet’s structure with the earthiness of contemporary dance. Using carminas\, or songs\, discovered in a Bavarian monastery to form the basis of the Latin text\, Carl Orff’s chorus sings of earthly pleasures\, while lamenting the powerful and heavy hand of fate. Sixteen dancers create an abstract landscape of movement\, celebrating the joys of spring; living the pleasures\, extravagances\, and despairs of tavern life; and closing with passionate love poems. Sixty years after its creation\, Carmina Burana remains a bold and astonishing audience favorite.

SUMMARY:Masterworks 3 Fri: Majestic Bruckner
DESCRIPTION:This concert program emotionally resonates with the juxtaposition of lightness and darkness and highs and lows\, through brilliant music and voices\, with works by Anton Bruckner and Morten Lauridsen. \nMorten Lauridsen‘s Lux Aeterna (“eternal light” in Latin) is a deeply moving expression of grief and mercy. The piece\, written by Lauridsen in the year of his mother’s death\, often calls comparison to requiems by Gabriel Fauré and Johannes Brahms\, but firmly and deservedly holds its own. The five movements\, each referencing light\, make up a choral cycle interspersed with familiar moments from the traditional Catholic Requiem Mass. The CSO Chorus and the College of Charleston Choir will join the orchestra for this meaningful\, profound choral masterpiece. \nThere are few people who can claim to have a nickname created exclusively for them by Leonard Bernstein. Maestro Carl St.Clair\, who grew up in Texas\, is one. St.Clair\, called “Cowboy” by the great conductor\, was a young conducting student when he became a mentee and friend of Bernstein’s. St.Clair became an assistant conductor with the Boston Symphony for several years\, held other top posts and guest conducted around the world\, and is now in his fourth decade as music director of the Pacific Symphony. \nThere is no denying that Anton Bruckner was an innovative composer\, even if his works were inspired by the musical masters (Beethoven and Wagner\, most commonly). Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 unfolds mysteriously but exquisitely from its first notes. The tension continues to rise and fall through all four movements; all the while\, the instruments are expertly interplayed during the highs and lows\, keeping the work pleasant and balanced. For the listener\, the proportions are vast but united musical expressions\, and one can imagine how they stretched the boundaries of music in his time.

SUMMARY:Masterworks - Beethoven 9
DESCRIPTION:INTRO\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRalph Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs is a choral work which heavily features a baritone soloist in four of the five songs. Based on poems set to music\, the verses are largely spiritually derived. While the first four maintain a tone of a deep introspection\, the concluding fifth song “Antiphon\,” lifts like a triumphant hymn. \nRapturous. Colossal. Legendary. These are all apt descriptions of one of the most well-known pieces of music of all time. In it\, you experience sounds on a grand scale and voices like nothing else heard before or since. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony —his last—was a success from the very beginning. \nThe Ninth Symphony premiered in 1824 at a concert conducted by the composer\, who at this point had lost his hearing. Its opening movement softly rumbles in anticipation and then builds to erupt; the second movement is lively but intense\, and never shallow; the third is intimate\, deliberately slow; the fourth movement ushers in a raucous fanfare\, and attempt to return to earlier themes\, and finally culminates victoriously with a united powerhouse of chorus\, soloists\, and musicians. \n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: Click here to learn about the new health and safety protocols. \nAll ticket sales are final. SUMMARY:Masterworks 3
DESCRIPTION:INTRO\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecognized as the leading opera composer of his time\, the prolific Gioachino Rossini wrote The Silken Staircase at age 20. The comedic opera\, though very popular in its day\, is not performed as often as are his The Barber of Seville or William Tell. However\, The Silken Staircase Overture stands the test of time as a masterpiece punctuated by lively banter between the strings and the upper woodwinds. \nAt its 1803 premiere\, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto was not entirely complete\, and the solo passages were played by the composer himself largely from memory. The concerto is often associated with Beethoven maneuvering away from his more Mozart-influenced earlier piano concertos to develop his own style. Indeed\, it is a wonderful display of the dramatic musicality that we have come to know as quintessentially Beethoven. \nIn The First Walpurgis Night\, Felix Mendelssohn reimagines a spooky yet comic tale with building momentum. With ghosts\, witches\, owls\, pitchforks\, and the devil this work is perfect for the Halloween holiday! Themes of conflict and oppression are woven throughout and intertwined by the music and the voices; in one moment it is serious and serene\, and in the next rowdy and rambunctious.
\n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: Click here to learn about the new health and safety protocols. \nAll ticket sales are final.
