SUMMARY:Masterworks 2- Serenade to Music-Ralph Vaughan Williams
DESCRIPTION:Although the composers featured on this program were chronological contemporaries during the turn of the 20th century\, individually\, they came from a wide variety of backgrounds\, with British\, Spanish\, French\, and Russian origins. Nevertheless\, the connections remain. From Maurice Ravel’s Tzigane and Pablo de Sarasate’s Fantasy on Bizet’s “Carmen” to Peter and the Wolf and The Firebird\, the works are linked together by threads of fairy tales and fantasy\, and mysterious\, intense undertones. \nProkofiev created the delightful orchestral fairy tale Peter and the Wolf\, told by orchestra and narrator\, with instruments representing different animals and characters. Often associated with children learning music appreciation\, it nonetheless continues to inspire and entertain listeners of all ages. Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite from his ballet score conjures Russian folk music and lore to weave a colorful\, animated tale of good versus evil. \nPROGRAM\nRalph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)-Serenade to Music\nPablo de Sarasate (1844–1908)-Fantasy on Bizet’s “Carmen”\nMaurice Ravel (1875-1937)-Tzigane for Violin and Orchestra\nSergei Prokofiev (1891–1953)-Peter and the Wolf\nIgor Stravinsky (1882-1971)-The Firebird Suite (1919 version) \n\nARTISTS\nVladimir Kulenovic\, Conductor\nMaria Ioudenitch\, Violin\nCharleston Symphony Chorus (Nicholas Quardokus\, Director)\nCollege of Charleston Concert Choir\nCharleston Southern University Concert Singers\nNarrator To Be Announced

SUMMARY:Masterworks 6-Beethoven: Missa Solemnis
DESCRIPTION:About his Missa Solemnis\, Beethoven said\, “My chief aim was to awaken and permanently instill spiritual feelings not only in the singers but in the listeners.” The work took four years to complete\, though he was working on several other important projects — such as his final three piano sonatas and his Ninth Symphony — concurrently. The composer took a “solemn mass\,” and because he was Beethoven\, what could be a traditional\, liturgical piece is transformed beneath his hands into an incredibly expressive\, larger-than-life work of art. \nThe exploration within Missa Solemnis is vast; the listener can contemplate war and peace\, prayer and turmoil\, brotherhood and strife\, humanity and higher power\, realism and idealism. The range and stamina required of the vocalists and chorus are demanding throughout. You don’t want to miss this seldom performed and challenging work of music and voices! \nPROGRAM\n\n\n\nLudwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)\n\nMissa Solemnis\n\n\n\n  \n\nARTISTS\nKen-David Masur\, Conductor\nVocalists To Be Announced\nCharleston Symphony Chorus (Nicholas Quardokus\, Director)\nCollege of Charleston Concert Choir
